FortisTCI Goes Green - A Five Year Plan to Reduce the Environmental Footprint in its service territories.
FortisTCI is dedicated to being a responsible corporate citizen and doing its part in protecting the environment.
The company has launched a full-scale environmental programme, designed to improve environmental and safety standards at the plant, head office and amongst employees. Our goal is to become the best utility company in the Caribbean.
To do this we are working towards achieving the ISO 14001 standard by 2012 – the most important international environmental standard in environmental management. Our plan will help us to achieve some of the best environmental codes in the region. The environmental programme will make a significant difference throughout our operations and more importantly our community.
Here’s how we are caring for our country and our planet:
| Reducing Exhaust Emissions We have increased the height of our stacks and have implemented state-of-the-art exhaust systems to maximise exhaust attenuation and optimal exhaust plume dispersion, while minimizing smoke visibility. The increase height of the stacks is designed so that prevailing winds take the exhaust plume over the ocean. |
|
| Reduction of Noise Pollution Soundproof buildings have already been built to house our engines and we are currently retrofitting older buildings and facilities to improve any noise pollution at these sites. |
|
| Water Monitoring FortisTCI already has measures in place to prevent ground water contamination. We’re also conducting a comprehensive water drainage study and when implemented next year will make a big impact to our water usage. |
|
| Staff Education Programme Our staff are being educated on sustainable living. Our company’s Employee Performance Appraisal System has also started to incentivise our staff to have a higher environmental awareness and practice. |
