FortisTCI Launches Summer Student Programmes

FortisTCI Launches Summer Student Programmes 18Jun 2012
Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands (Monday, June 18, 2012) -

FortisTCI has recently announced the start of two new student programmes that the Utility will be offering, commencing summer 2012. This past Friday Principals from various high schools throughout the Turks and Caicos Islands, the TCI Community College and Ministry of Education Officials filled the FortisTCI conference room on Leeward Highway to hear how their students can benefit from the Student Summer Employment Programme (SSEP) and the Summer Internship Programme (SIP).

SSEP has been developed to expose participants to the utility industry while also encouraging growth in young adults pursuing their respective career paths by providing them with the opportunity to apply what they have learned in the classroom in a real working environment. SSEP will run each year from June through August and include five (5) successful candidates who must be enrolled in a University or College Undergraduate Programme. These candidates must have a major in Accounting, Business, Engineering, Information Technology, Law or Marketing. Each successful candidate must also possess a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and submit at the time of application an official transcript, attendance record, two letters of recommendation, proof of residence status and a copy of their current NHIB card.

SIP reaches out to high school students within the TCI and will give applicants a chance to be exposed to a professional working environment for two full working weeks throughout each summer, July - August. The focus of SIP is to show participants how to interact in a highly developed workplace while also showcasing professional fields that these students may not have been exposed to. The first session of this programme will run from July 9th - July 20th, 2012 with students observing normal working hours at FortisTCI. Applicants for SIP must be in the Fourth or Fifth Form at their respective schools, obtain a recommendation letter from their guidance or career councellors and submit a 250 word essay entitled "Why FortisTCI Should Hire Me as an Intern Employee."

Director of Human Resource for FortisTCI Judy Missick said, "The official launch of SSEP and SIP is another momentous period for FortisTCI. It is a wonderful occasion to be able to open our doors and our workplace to contribute to the human resources development in the Turks and Caicos Islands." Missick continued saying, "Establishing these programs has been a goal of ours for a long time and we are proud to have the infrastructure in place to accommodate them."

Applications for the SIP programme are currently being accepted through each respective high school in the TCI and applications for the SSEP programme are currently being accepted through the FortisTCI Human Resource Department. Ruth Forbes, Vice President of Finance and Chief Financial Officer had this to say about the launch, "We look forward to sharing our workplace with these bright young scholars and we look forward to watching them mature. There is nothing more valuable than investing in human resources. This is why we are taking the opportunity to invest from an early age, because we know that one day those that walk our halls and our property as interns and student workers are potential future employees."
