FortisTCI Statement on Recent Outages

FortisTCI Statement on Recent Outages 17May 2019

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands (Friday, May 17, 2019) – On Thursday, May 16 and Friday May 17, FortisTCI customers in Providenciales, North Caicos, and Middle Caicos were affected by service interruptions due to severe weather conditions.

On Thursday, May 16, the outage began at approximately 8:10 a.m. and service was fully restored to all customers by 9:35 a.m. On Friday, May 17, the outage began at approximately 9:20 a.m. and service was restored to most customers by approximately 10:30 a.m. Service was fully restored to all customer by 11:30 a.m.

FortisTCI considers reliability of electricity supply its main priority, next to safety. Thursday’s and Friday’s outages were storm related and beyond the control of company. While FortisTCI has very robust protection systems, which the company continues to improve, all electricity systems are vulnerable to lightning strikes. In these adverse conditions, to the extent that is safe to do so, FortisTCI employees work diligently to restore electricity to all customers as quickly as possible.

The Bahamas Meteorology Department has reported that a quasi-stationary front near the central Bahamas is slowly moving southward, and is expected to produce continued rainy weather and widely scattered thunderstorms in the area through Saturday, May 18.
