Providenciales, Turks and Caicos Islands (Tuesday, July 13, 2021) – FortisTCI welcomes 10 college interns this summer through the company’s Student Summer Employment Program (SSEP). Each candidate completed a competitive application and interview process to secure their new roles, and they come with varying levels of tertiary education and sector interests. Of the successful student employees, one student is working at the Grand Turk office and nine students at the Providenciales-based headquarters for eight weeks through August 2021.
Kenyatta Rigby is a second-year student studying Business at Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, working with the Customer Service Department. Eryn Quelch is an A-Levels student at Steyning Grammar School, UK, interested in studying Law and is working with the EHS Department. Derliser Youth is a fourth-year student studying Business Management and Finance at the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College and is working with the Finance Department. Also working with Finance is Rhakeem Lightbourne, a third-year student studying Accounting at Broward College, USA. Raymond Kendall is a second-year student studying Automotive Engineering at the Turks and Caicos Islands Community College and is working with the Grand Turk Operations Department.
Jamieson Simmons is a third-year college student studying Computer Science at Hillsborough Community College, USA, working with the IT Department. Ushannia Hardware is a fourth-year student studying Law at Oxford Brooks University, UK, working with the Legal Services Department. Trevante Brown is a third-year student studying Mechanical Engineering at New York Institute of Engineering, USA, working with the Energy Production Department. Caitlin Lewis is a second-year student studying Mechanical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, UK, and is also working with the Energy Production Department. Michael Saunders is an A-Levels student at Trinity College School, CA, interesting in studying either Aerospace or Biomedical Engineering and is working with the Transmission and Distribution Department.
FortisTCI President and CEO Ruth Forbes said, “This is an exciting time to serve in the electric utility business as the industry is transforming like never before due to advancements in technology. I do not doubt that these students will get first-hand experience and exposure at FortisTCI to some of the changes that are also happening on a global scale. What I am most excited about is the exposure our young, up-and-coming professionals will get to the vast skill sets required to operate an electric utility, and I am pleased to see a balance of both business and technical roles among this year’s group.”

Understanding this, the company saw it a priority to return the student internship program for college students in 2021 for their continued development and growth. The FortisTCI SSEP was created to provide the Turks and Caicos Islands youth with opportunities to gain experience working in the energy sector at a professional level. This year students are also required to perform research as a part of their work-study experience. Their studies will support their participation in the inaugural FortisTCI Youth Energy Roundtable under the theme “The Future of Energy in the Turks and Caicos Islands.” The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 12, 2021.
