FortisTCI Limited (FTCI) became a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis Inc. located in Newfoundland, Canada in August 2006. Turks and Caicos Utility Limited (TCU), which is the sole provider of electricity on the Islands of Grand Turk and Salt Cay, was acquired by FTCI in August 2012. FTIC is the sole provider of electricity in Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, East Caicos and adjacent Cays, and South Caicos. Together the two companies serve approximately 12,000 electricity customers in the Turks & Caicos Islands. The Utilities have an aggregate diesel-fired generating capacity of approximately 75 megawatts.
The Company currently has an ASAI (Average System Availability Index) in excess of 99.9% and is one of the most reliable utilities in the region. FTCI and its group of companies have a strategic objective to “be the best utility in the Caribbean by year end 2013.” Today the Company is considered one of the leading electricity suppliers in the Caribbean.
Headquartered in Providenciales there are 151 employees throughout all service territories, 86% that are Turks and Caicos Islanders. Lead by President and CEO Eddinton Powell, the Company operates with five major departments that include Finance, Operations, Production & Engineering, Customer and Corporate Services and Information Technology.
The Company has a combined diesel-fired generating capacity of 75 megawatts and met a combined peak demand of 34.7 MW in 2012. The Company owns 600 circuit kilometers of transmission and distribution lines across the islands. FTCI operates a fully integrated system providing for the generation and distribution of energy in Providenciales, North and Middle Caicos. It also owns and operates by way of AEP and TCU independent generating stations and distribution systems on Grand Turk, Salt Cay, and South Caicos
The Company operates exclusive, fully integrated utility systems providing for the generation and retail and distribution of energy to virtually all of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The company serves the Islands of Providenciales, North Caicos, and Middle Caicos pursuant to a 50-year License which expires in 2037, on South Caicos pursuant to a 50-year license that runs through 2036, and on Grand Turk and Salt Cay under a 50 year License that expires on the 31st March 2036. In addition, the Company’s franchise area includes the cays between Providenciales and North Caicos (except Parrot Cay), and East Caicos and adjacent cays and inlets under two 25 year Licenses granted on the 20th March 2012.
FortisTCI has a strong commitment to the environment and continues to take measures by investing in infrastructure as well as policy and procedures that are consistent with international standards. The Company is currently working to become ISO 14001 compliant to strengthen that commitment.
