FortisTCI Limited (FTCI), a subsidiary of Fortis Inc., is the sole provider of electricity in the Turks and Caicos Islands on Providenciales, North Caicos, Middle Caicos, South Caicos, East Caicos and adjacent Cays. Turks and Caicos Utility Limited (TCU), the sole provider of electricity on the Islands of Grand Turk and Salt Cay, was acquired by FTCI in 2012. Together the two companies serve approximately 15,000 customers across the archipelago. FTCI and TCU have an aggregate diesel-fired generating capacity of approximately 84 megawatts.


Despite being severely impacted by Hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, FTCI concluded the year with an ASAI (Average System Availability Index) of 99.91%, and is considered to be one of the most reliable utilities in the region.

The Team    

Headquartered in Providenciales there are 165 employees throughout all service territories, 86% that are Turks and Caicos Islanders. Led by President and CEO Eddinton Powell, the Company operates under four major divisions; Finance & Human Resources, Customer & Corporate Services, Energy Productions & Project Management, and Transmission & Distribution. The Company’s Directors support their respective Vice President with divisional duties.

FTCI and TCU have a combined diesel-fired generating capacity of 84 MW and met a combined peak demand of 41.5MW in 2017. The company owns more than 600 circuit kilometers of transmission and distribution lines across the islands. Together, FTCI and TCU operate four vertically integrated electricity systems providing for the generation and distribution of electrcity to customers on Providenciales, North and Middle Caicos, South Caicos, Grand Turk and Salt Cay.



The Company operates exclusive, fully integrated utility systems providing for the generation and retail and distribution of energy to nearly all of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The company serves the Islands of Providenciales, North Caicos, and Middle Caicos pursuant to a 50-year License which expires in 2037, on South Caicos pursuant to a 50-year license that runs through 2036 and on Grand Turk and Salt Cay under a 50 year License that expires on the 31st March 2036. In addition, the company’s franchise area includes the cays between Providenciales and North Caicos (except Parrot Cay), and East Caicos and adjacent cays and inlets under two 25 year Licenses granted on the 20th March 2012.



FortisTCI has a strong commitment to the environment and has implemented policies and procedures that are consistent with international standards. The company is currently seeking ISO 14001-2015 certification to strengthen its commitment to the environment.


FortisTCI is also focused on delivering environmentally sustainable energy solutions to the TCI, including grid-tied solar installations for commercial and residential customers.


The company purchased its first electric car in 2017 as a part of the electric vehicle (EV) and charging station pilot program. This recent investment will provide insight into EV technology and help the FortisTCI prepare a platform for interested customers.





Community Builders    

At FortisTCI, investment in the community and building partnerships is an integral part of the company’s mission. While there are a number of programs that FortisTCI supports financially, staff also willingly give of their time to aid several community programs. In 2017 staff reported 2,320 community service hours across the Turks and Caicos Islands.


Youth, Sports & Development Programs


Youth in particular, are a major focus of the FortisTCI Corporate Social Responsibility Program. Initiatives like the FortisTCI Youth Football League provide an opportunity for nearly 300 boys and girls aged nine to 13, to enjoy the sport and improve their skills through friendly competition. The Annual FortisTCI National Science Fair for Primary and High School students brings together the country’s best students in the areas of science and technology. And year-round school tours and presentations are held at FortisTCI offices to help nurture and shape the country’s future workforce.


Healthy Living: A Community Effort


The annual FortisTCI Spring Fun Walk & Run began as an initiative to promote healthy lifestyles among staff. The event, which was eventually opened to the public, has become one of the largest walk/runs that the TCI has to offer. Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the 2018 FortisTCI Spring Fun Walk & Run attracted over 500 registrants. Featured community partners include the Red Cross, National Cancer Society, The Heart Foundation, local medical practitioners, and many more.
